Vomiting is the body’s mechanism for forcefully expelling the contents of the stomach through the mouth. It occurs due to contractions of the abdominal muscles and diaphragm, controlled by the “vomiting center” in the brain. Vomiting is usually preceded by nausea.
💡 Important Information
Common causes:
Vomiting can result from various conditions such as food poisoning, gastritis, motion sickness, pregnancy-related morning sickness, or side effects of medications.
Basic self-care:
It is recommended to drink oral rehydration solutions to replace lost fluids, sip water slowly in small amounts, and eat bland, easy-to-digest foods.
Warning signs — seek medical attention immediately if:
• Vomiting persists for more than 24–48 hours
• There is blood in the vomit, or the vomit appears black like coffee grounds
• Severe abdominal pain occurs together with vomiting
• Signs of severe dehydration develop, such as very little urination, dry mouth, or extreme fatigue
